{"id":1294,"date":"2021-06-09T13:24:01","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T11:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.operinter.com\/el-shipping-en-pandemia-ii-alianzas-de-navieras-y-sector-transitario-atomizado\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T11:52:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T09:52:17","slug":"el-shipping-en-pandemia-ii-alianzas-de-navieras-y-sector-transitario-atomizado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/operinter.com\/en\/2021\/06\/09\/el-shipping-en-pandemia-ii-alianzas-de-navieras-y-sector-transitario-atomizado\/","title":{"rendered":"Shipping in pandemic (II): alliances and an atomised freight forwarding sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.operinter.com\/maritime\/?lang=en\">World shipping<\/a>, the most used mode for the major import-export flows of <strong>global trade<\/strong>, has been affected since the outbreak of the pandemic by a series of factors such as the restructuring of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operinter.com\/shipping-in-pandemic-i-blank-sailing-and-high-freight-charges\/?lang=en\">ports<\/a> of call, the lack of containers,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.operinter.com\/shipping-in-pandemic-i-blank-sailing-and-high-freight-charges\/?lang=en\"> blank sailing<\/a> and the increase in maritime freight rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, during all these months, another trend that had already begun before COVID-19 has been consolidating: the high <strong>concentration<\/strong> of the large <strong>shipping lines,<\/strong> which account for more than 80% of the world fleet, as opposed to a global <strong>freight forwarder market<\/strong> that is totally pulverised, highly fragmented, despite operating worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aware of the competitive and fragmented scenario in which we find ourselves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operinter.com\/?lang=en\">Operinter<\/a> works every day to increase its <strong>negotiating capacity<\/strong> with shipping companies thanks to its presence in all the world&#8217;s markets, its personalised services and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operinter.com\/who-are-we-are\/?lang=en\">extensive experience<\/a> as an <strong>international logistics operator<\/strong> by land, sea and air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Freight forwarding: fragmentation and specialisation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>global forwarding market<\/strong> is characterised by its atomisation and the dominance, in most countries, of local forwarders competing in an interconnected world. They have a <strong>deep knowledge<\/strong> of the client from their proximity, a high degree of specialisation and collaboration with companies in other countries. It is a stable industry, with narrow margins and a <strong>high level of competition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why some experts suggest that a <strong>greater concentration<\/strong> of this type of companies would result in a change in the business relationship between freight forwarders and <strong>shipping companies.<\/strong> In other words, greater power and more scope for decision making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shipping lines concentration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>shipping business <\/strong>is in a very different situation to the freight forwarding. Currently, the nine largest lines in the world have established themselves in three major maritime alliances, which means that the shipping market is highly <strong>concentrated<\/strong>. In fact, 100% of the <strong>largest ships<\/strong> (+18,000 TEUs) are in the hands of one of these big companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are Alliance <strong>2 M <\/strong>(formed by the Danish <em>Maersk<\/em> and Swiss <em>MSC<\/em>, which together account for 33% of the world fleet), <strong>Ocean Alliance<\/strong> (with the French <em>CMA CGM<\/em>, the Chinese <em>Cosco<\/em> and the Taiwanese <em>Evergreen<\/em> with 30.1%) and, finally, <strong>The Alliance <\/strong>(the companies <em>Hapag Lloyd<\/em>, <em>HMM<\/em>,<em> ONE<\/em> and <em>Yang Ming<\/em> with 19.8% of the ships).
