{"id":16502,"date":"2026-08-26T10:17:43","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T08:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/operinter.com\/2026\/08\/26\/spain-morocco-bilateral-trade-an-analysis\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T12:12:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T10:12:14","slug":"spain-morocco-bilateral-trade-an-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/operinter.com\/en\/2026\/08\/26\/spain-morocco-bilateral-trade-an-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain-Morocco bilateral trade, an analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a time when relations between Spain and Morocco are more in the spotlight than ever \u2013 two countries separated by a mere 14 kilometres across the <strong>Strait of Gibraltar<\/strong> \u2013 the two kingdoms maintain a relationship characterised by strong commercial, economic and logistical ties. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bilateral trade reached<strong> 22,757 million euros<\/strong> in 2025, consolidating Spain\u2019s position as one of Morocco\u2019s main trading partners and reinforcing the strategic role of the Strait as a corridor between Europe and North Africa. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the first half of 2026, Spanish exports to Morocco grew by<strong> 3.5%<\/strong> to <strong>6,420.5 million<\/strong> euros, whilst imports rose by<strong> 4.1% <\/strong> to<strong> 5,795.5 million<\/strong>. These figures maintain the traditional trade surplus in Spain\u2019s favour and highlight the growing interdependence of the two economies.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Industrial integration and economic interdependence <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The integration of the two economies has intensified in recent years. Morocco has established itself as an industrial hub geared towards European markets, particularly in sectors such as the<strong> automotive industry,<\/strong> whilst numerous Spanish companies are involved in its supply chains. This situation gives rise to growing <strong>economic interdependence<\/strong>, although this is not necessarily symmetrical.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Geographical proximity<\/strong> is one of the key assets of this relationship. The short distance between the two markets facilitates more agile supply chains and supports <strong><em>nearshoring <\/em><\/strong>strategies that aim to bring production closer to European consumer markets in order to avoid dependence on Asian markets.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy, a strategic resource <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The energy sector is another cornerstone of this relationship. Spain maintains a <strong>positive electricity balance<\/strong> with Morocco, characterised by a substantial flow of<strong> gas<\/strong>, one of the main energy products that Spain supplies to the country. Added to this is the significant trade in <strong>petroleum products<\/strong>, which also accounts for a substantial proportion of Morocco\u2019s energy imports.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Morocco is making progress in developing<strong> renewable energy generation<\/strong> and <strong>diversifying <\/strong>its energy supply sources, its energy links with Spain remain of strategic importance and reinforce the interdependence between the two countries. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strait, a vital corridor <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The growth in trade and energy exchanges places the Strait of Gibraltar in a key position within <strong>Euro-African<\/strong> supply chains.
