The <strong>European Union<\/strong> has reached a provisional agreement to simplify a key tool in its <strong>climate strategy<\/strong>, which will have implications across the entire EU.<\/p>\n\n<p>This regulation seeks to ensure that <strong>carbon-intensive imported products,<\/strong> such as cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen, meet standards similar to those required within the European market, thus preventing so-called <strong>\u2018carbon leakage\u2019.<\/strong> This occurs when, due to costs arising from climate policies, companies in certain industrial sectors relocate their production to other countries, or when imports from these countries replace equivalent products that are less intensive in terms of <strong>greenhouse gas emissions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>This new agreement introduces significant changes that ease the burden on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operinter.com\/en\/who-are-we-are\/\">importers,<\/a> especially those with low volumes, and <strong>improves administrative efficiency<\/strong> for all types of shippers. Although this measure has yet to be formally adopted, it represents an important step towards the definitive implementation of the <strong>MAFC,<\/strong> scheduled for <strong>1 January 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fewer obligations for small imports<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p>The main change is that importers who transport less than<strong> 50 tonnes per year<\/strong> of products subject to the MAFC will not have to comply with the usual reporting obligations or emissions calculations. This exemption aims to <strong>facilitate regulatory compliance<\/strong> for smaller players without compromising the integrity of the system.<\/p>\n\n<p>With this measure, the EU aims to prevent small and medium-sized enterprises from bearing disproportionate burdens by focusing controls on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operinter.com\/en\/\">operators<\/a> with the greatest climate impact. Thanks to this <strong>simplification,<\/strong> many smaller businesses will be able to continue operating more easily, without neglecting their environmental objectives.
