Rising tariffs reshape global logistics

In a context of growing economic protectionism, tariffs have returned to the centre of global trade policy. As major powers seek to protect their strategic sectors, import taxes hamper international trade. From Europe to Asia to Africa, and especially the United States, tariff barriers have multiplied, affecting industries such as technology, steel, automobiles and agricultural products.

This trend has triggered tensions between historical trading partners, put previously signed agreements in jeopardy and forced multinational companies to redesign their supply chains.

Supply chain effects

In order to mitigate the impact of tariffs, some trade routes have become more complex. For example, goods that were previously transported directly from Asia to the United States are now transiting through third countries, which can increase times and associated costs.

This reconfiguration of flows has placed greater demand on certain ports and infrastructure, in some cases less able to absorb this additional volume, which has contributed to operational challenges. In addition, external factors such as the situation in the Red Sea and transit restrictions in the Panama Canal continue to influence maritime trade globally.

A strategic truce

Amid this climate of tension, the recent US decision to temporarily suspend some tariffs on Chinese goods has been interpreted as an attempt to de-escalate the trade conflict. The agreement, reached after bilateral negotiations in Geneva, provides for a 90-day pause in the imposition of new tariffs and seeks to create a space for dialogue.

Although welcomed by the markets, this truce is not definitive. The trade war has made it clear that logistics is no longer just a technical issue, but a strategic axis for trade and geopolitics. In this new scenario, the resilience, diversification and adaptability of global logistics operators such as Operinter are essential. With an international presence and comprehensive supply chain management, Operinter is positioned as a key player in helping companies to anticipate, overcome trade barriers and remain competitive in an environment that is increasingly conditioned by political decisions.
