New EUDR regulation: sustainability in international trade

The fight against global deforestation takes a firm step forward with the entry into force of the European Union Deforestation Free Regulation (EUDR). This regulation establishes a stricter legal framework to regulate the import, export and trade of certain products within the European Union. The aim is to eliminate the link between European consumption and the destruction of forests worldwide.

Faced with this new scenario, Operinter, a 360º international logistics operator, has organised an informative seminar in which experts and operators have analysed the real implications of the regulation, the immediate challenges for importing and exporting companies, and the possible solutions to ensure effective compliance. This is a transformation of the commercial model that affects strategic sectors such as food, the timber industry and retail.

Keys and objectives of the regulation

The EUDR aims to reduce deforestation and forest degradation associated with products traded in the EU. Although it entered into force in June 2023, its implementation will be gradual: from December 2024 for large operators, and from June 2026 for SMEs and micro-enterprises.

It applies to products derived from raw materials such as timber, coffee, cocoa, soy, beef, rubber or palm oil. Companies will have to prove that these products do not come from land that has been deforested after 31 December 2020 and that they comply with the legislation of the country of origin.

Implications for logistics operators

The EUDR imposes a system of due diligence based on three key pillars:

Precise geographical traceability guaranteeing deforestation-free origin.

• Supply chain risk assessment and mitigation.

Formal declaration of compliance through the European Commission’s digital system.

The regulation also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect biodiversity, thereby promoting a more sustainable supply chain.

Operinter drives EUDR compliance

Aware of the complexity of these regulations, Operinter is already working with practical solutions to facilitate its clients’ compliance: from documentation analysis and traceability monitoring to coordination with international suppliers.

As part of the information day on the new EU Deforestation Regulation, the company’s team of experts shared experiences and offered expert advice to ensure legal certainty, logistical efficiency and regulatory compliance in international trade on this directive.
